Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando have been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following their on-field confrontation during the opening day of the second Test in Colombo.

Both players were found guilty of breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers inappropriate physical contact with a player, match official or any other person during an international match, the ICC said on Monday.

Jaiswal and Fernando were each fined 25% of their match fees and handed one demerit point. Neither player had committed a previous offence in the 24 months before the incident.

The clash occurred in the 17th over of India’s innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The Indian opener approached the Sri Lankan bowler and the pair exchanged words before Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal.

Jaiswal then leaned forward, resulting in head-to-head contact between the two players.

Both players admitted the breaches and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, avoiding the need for formal hearings.
